GMI - An amazing experience for its faculty member

“I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to live and teach music at the Global Music Institute (GMI) in New Delhi, India for the fall semester of 2014. GMI is a vanguard for music education in New Delhi, India and I would both recommend this program to any student, beginner or advanced, that wishes to further their understanding of music, and to gain practical experience in musical performance that could otherwise be very difficult to come across; also, to teachers coming from abroad, this is an incredible opportunity and it will indubitably change your life forever,” says James Hill in 2014 about the GMI, an advanced professional music institute in india, where he taught music.

Hill is all praise for the institute, a berklee college of music partner school, it is evident. But what is more important is what he says further on in the article. He says that the GMI is a leader in music education in New Delhi. He says he is proud to say he is a benefactor of this outstanding institution which gives young talent an opportunity to develop theoretical understanding of music, performance experience and creativity. He says that the GMI aims to inculcate in students creativity and help students educate themselves – “something I found was extremely successful during my stay as faculty at GMI”.

Hill is humble enough to say that though he was enrolled at the GMI as a faculty member for a month, he got to learn a lot in terms of life and music during his stay. He admits the he received a “culture shock” on arriving in Delhi, something that was so intense that it changed the way he looked at the world.

He says that he had a profound realization that people, and students, have common aspirations irrespective of the countries they come from. He writes in no less beautiful and profound lines about his students, “The students I taught at GMI all desired one simple thing, to learn about music, and the relationship it has to life. My students all remind me of myself, when I was studying music in College, and this realization made it much easier for me to serve as a guide and mentor.”

He sums up this write up saying the GMI is an organization of excellence catering to each student individually while representing the student body as a whole, always without discrimination. He says, “GMI allows students to simultaneously study the essentials of music—the essentials being Ear Training, Music Theory, Ensemble Performance, and Basic Keyboard—and any type of music in which the student expresses interest; whether it might be Indian classical music, eastern classical, western classical, jazz, blues, or so on.”
